After returning from vacation in Mexico recently, we were seriously craving an American brewed craft beer. Nothing against Mexico, in fact we happen to love Mexico: great food, super nice and genuine people, fantastic culture and postcard photos around every corner. But let’s just say Mexico leaves a little something to be desired when it comes to the many options afforded the average American craft beer drinker these days.

So, upon returning to our native Idaho, one of the first things we did was hit the local beer store in search of something tasty and strong, something that would give us a quick open-handed slap to the kisser and scream “this is America, dammit!" That beer was Uinta Brewing Co.’s Cockeyed Cooper Bourbon Barrel-aged Barley Wine Ale.

Hailing out of Salt Lake City, Utah, Uinta (pronounced you-IN-tah) was established in 1993 and has been cranking out beers ever since. So how about this Cockeyed Cooper? Well, this is our second time drinking it and it’s just as good the second time as it was the first. What can we say except that we’re a sucker for high ABV, barleywine style ales and anything that's bourbon barrel-aged. The two seem to have been destined for one another. And like most beers of this type, Cockeyed Cooper has a slightly boozy aroma and bourbon taste; something we like—a lot.

Not much more to say about this one except that if you are able to get Uinta beers in your neck of the woods, check them out. They have a huge range of beers: pilsner, IPA, black lager, gose, saison, porter and a bevy of seasonal releases. If you can't get them in your area yet: call them up and beg. It will be worth it.

Buzz:

Well-crafted product that’s readily available in our Idaho market. The beers we’ve had from Uinta have all been top notch.

Buzzkill:

A bit on the expensive side for many of their beers, but we can justify it when the quality is there.
