Week one of the 2016 Dakar Rally has come to a close with the riders completing a shortened stage seven on Saturday due to bad weather and welcomed Sunday’s rest day. Then it’s back to racing on Monday with stage 8 from Salta to Belén, Argentina. After a 36th place finish in stage three finish and a loss of over seven minutes, Australian Toby Price has crept his way back up the leaderboard to within three minutes of Paulo Goncalves in the General Rankings. Goncalves’ consistency has paid off so far as the Honda rider’s worst stage finish is a 12th in stage five. Meanwhile, American Ricky Brabec has been impressive in his Dakar debut with three top ten stage finishes and a steady climb to 12th place in the General Rankings. All five American riders still remain in the race; with Ian Blythe in 34th, Alexander Smith 47th, Scott Bright 58th, and Carroll Gittere 83rd overall. Even more impressive is that for all five Americans this is their very first Dakar.
